Cannot Bold/Underline/Italicize

When i edit PDF's i used to be able to use commands on my MAC like Command+B to Bold in a Text Box etc.. but now all those basic commands open things like bookmarks and strange grid patterns on the file. Its really annoying. Appreciate any help.
