Highlighting with vertical bar

I am highlighting a document which I saved as a pdf .

I managed to highlight most of it using the vertical bar highlighting tool. All of a sudden the highlighting tool has become a free-form highlighting tool.

How do I get back the vertical bar?

I have not edited the document or gone in edit mode.
