My client wants ability to extend the colour of a thermometer

A client is doing a charity drive and wants to be able to manage updating a thermometer graphic.  As they progress, they want to extend the colour in the thermometer, dynamically.  Does anyone know a way to do this with a dynamic PDF file?  So far, all I have is using a square Zapf Dingbat and keep it white until they want to colour it in.
