Colleague's comments (using iPad app) not displaying when sent to me

A colleague added comments (sticky notes) to a PDF using his iPad Adobe Reader app. He also drew notes on the PDF. When he sent me the file, I could see the image of the comments but could not click them to see the contents. When I click the Comments toolbar, it shows "No Comments in this document." The notes that were drawn with a pen show up fine. I've tried viewing this file with Acrobat Pro DC on a PC and using the Adobe Reader app on an iPad. It's the same problem on both platforms. Is there a way for me to view these comments? Or for my colleague to send the file in a way that allows me to view the comments?

 

I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like to see the comment image, but the toolbar tells me there are no comments in the document. There are probably 75-100 comments overall and I just want to be able to read the content within each of them.

 

Any insight or help you can offer would be much appreciated!
